I think the number one question I get from my readers is, “HOW DO I START?” or “HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?” Although you can scroll back through my blog and read all about my fitness journey, I know that many of you are new readers to my blog! And even though I have workout programs, tips, tricks, and tutorials for how I’ve lost the weight, it’s become clear to me that I have many readers who have never worked out before. AND to them I say, WELCOME!! I wish I could consult and sit down with each and everyone of you. But this blog post will just have to do. Before I tell you the most simple tip I have to get YOU started on your fitness journey, I want to tell you a few things.

I want us all to take a big deep breath with each other. Ready. Set. BREATH!

Now, I want you to wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself a big hug. I know, it’s cheesy. BUT DO IT. Love yourself. Love who you are. We aren’t trying to change you, we are trying to IMPROVE you. Trying to find YOUR BEST SELF! Now, I want you to run to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and tell yourself how beautiful you are. Really look at yourself and say it until you believe it. This is so important. More than you even know. You have to love yourself and appreciate the body you have. A fitness journey is just as much mental as it is physical. If you are struggling with self-love right now, don’t you worry, it will improve as you continue on your journey. But only if you work on it. Do this self-love mirror exercise every day and I promise you will start to see the beauty in yourself.

One more thing, along the lines of self-love. I want to say something LOUD and CLEAR. NO ONE. and I mean NO ONE, is in competition with you. You are not racing anyone. You are not proving anything to anyone. The only competition you have, is with yourself. Focus on YOUR improvement. On YOUR journey. I want you to remember this quote and repeat it to yourself.

“I am in competition with NO ONE. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone. I am simply trying to be better than the person I was yesterday!”

Are you still with me? Are you ready to improve yourself? Because if you are…

I can promise you 2 things!

ONE

I know you can do it. I know you can figure it out. I know you can find strength in yourself. I know you can find happiness through working out. I know you can improve the beautiful person you are.

TWO

It really isn’t as complicated as it seems. I know, I am sure it seems daunting, but I promise you it’s not.

If I can do it, you can do it!

NOW LET’S GET STARTED!

You want to know where to start?

Here it is,

Take pictures of yourself. You don’t have to wear a bikini, you don’t have to be too revealing, but take a picture of you facing directly at the camera, directly away from the camera, and to the side with your arms lifted.

I promise promise promise you will want them in the future.

Then…

BUY A PAIR OF RUNNING SHOES!

I’m serious.

That’s it.

Save up some money. Invest in a GREAT pair of running shoes (like these BRAND NEW Asics ones that came out TODAY)

Really though, these are a great shoe to start with. Super comfortable with great support! And they are great for cross training too!

OR, go to a thrift store and buy some second hand!

AND once you have those shoes,

START WALKING

START RUNNING!

AND make sure you document every workout you do. Get yourself a notebook COMPLETELY DEDICATED TO YOUR JOURNEY!!

Yes, even walking is a workout, so document it!

I was thinking back to the VERY beginning of my fitness journey. Before CrossFit, before pilates, or yoga, or my gym membership.

What did I do?

I would run. NOT very far. But I didn’t know what else to do, and I didn’t feel fit enough to do anything else. Now, you don’t have to be fit to try other things. If you are overweight you can still go to CrossFit and they will cater the workouts for you. BUT, if you don’t have that extra money or time or if it feels too intimating…

That’s it.

Get up.

MOVE!

Walk!

RUN!

Skip!

Leap!

If you have that pair of running shoes in your closet, you have a constant reminder! A reminder to get up and try!

You could just walk around the playground while the kids play!

OR, you could even just walk around your house!

IT really is as simple as that.

Walk a half mile the first day. A mile the next. Maybe jog a little the next day. Just keep going and you will see yourself change.

    It really IS that simple. What finally flipped the switch for me was that I was tired. I was tired mentally, physically, emotionally. I was tired of looking in the mirror and not liking what I saw. People say it all the time, but for some reason, it finally clicked.

    Complaining won’t make it go away. Complaining won’t get you fit. Complaining won’t fix things.

    So I started. I woke up early the next morning, before everyone else did, and did a 30 minute exercise DVD. I wanted to stop, I was huffing and puffing. I felt like I was a total joke, no way could I keep up. But then I came back the next morning. And the following morning.

    Now I could do that first level workout no problem! I don’t even modify the moves. That’s not bragging, that’s just saying it takes time for your body to react and change, but once it does, it’s like you hear angels singing. It may not be in the form of a six pack stomach, but in the form of you lasting longer, pushing harder, lifting more.

    I look in the mirror now, and I still see trouble spots but I now really smile at how my arms are so defined, or how my waist is curving in, or how when I flex my legs, I see definition. I’m proud of it. I’ve worked for it. I’ve earned it. And I want everyone to experience that joy of looking at yourself – and being proud of the work you’ve put in and the results you’ve been rewarded with.

    I recently started reading your blog and love it. Esp this post. I went to goodwill three years ago and bought a second (prob third hand) pair of running shoes and started walking. I walked and walked and walked everywhere after my dr told my I was pre-diabetic and very unhealthy. Well I’m happy to say three years later and two pregnancies I’be lost 96 lbs and want to lose my last 8. So I started your 6 week challenge and let me say I’m sore I love the feeling a new workout gives me .

    I come home from work everyday and beg my husband for a walk. He’s tired from being at school all day but I have a desk job- I keep telling him the only way to prevent our children from being unhealthy like we became is to show them that mom and dad like to stay active- and being outside, moving around, dancing to the credits at the end of a movie… those are the simplest and most free ways to keep your energy up and be healthier!

    Thank you, THANK you, THANK YOU! I’m starting today… and NOT GIVING UP! Since quitting work over 2 years ago, I’m at my heaviest and most unhealthy weight of my life. And now I have pictures to prove it. 😉 I am embarrassed but I do love myself and I’m going to do this for myself and my children. Hold me to it, will ya? You’re such an inspiration! Again, thanks for gentle push to put me in motion.

    Hey Sadie!
    What kept you motivated throughout your journey? and to keep going? I have done quite well after some testing with my naturopath doctor (highly recommend for those who are eating right yet weight is still not coming off) and doing more lifting at the gym all my hard work was paying off! Then I discovered Whole30 and fell in love and had 50 lbs off this past February! I felt amazing and capable of everything! My husband and I went on vacation and enjoyed the food and alcohol and once we got back I couldn’t seem cut the treats again! Did another round of Whole30 and got myself back on track then BAM off the wagon I fell! so hard that I put 17 lbs back on since March 1! Yikes! I’m now back to Whole30 which is where I want to be and I know we are all human and slip ups are normal but putting 17 lbs back on isn’t normal people lol Enlightened me on what kept you motivated!
